  Kansas Unicorn

They found him in the mud,
dried and baked,
timer set for eons.
A barrel-chested,
thick-skinned,
three toed snout-horned unicorn
caught walking creek banks,
fat bellied, skull, leg bone,
jawbone, vertebrae
left as passing testimony,
in its company a giant tortoise,
ancient camels, mastodons,
wild pigs and three-toed horses;
ancient bones
shouting stories of their lives
played out day by day
on plains nine million years told.
