  Carry Me Tonight

headlights bold
snakes of snow
that slash and writhe
flashing whorls
mix inky black
and blinding white

drifts wump wump
beneath my car
side-to-side it slips
wipers rasp and rasp
a blizzard’s canto
of wind and road
frozen specters swirl
converging around
my homeward longing

I know not what
this storm will do -
leave me unto me?
my patience begs
will and fortune -
carry me tonight
