Black Silk Scarf

Mother's battered cedar chest
Laden with her treasures
"Moth Guarantee" sworn
Like spices and linen to spare
Grave clothes from teeth of time.
Gauzy home-made wedding frock
Recalls the ritual of family, friends,
Proud parents gathered to honor
God and the girl/woman dressed
In white.

Curly locks of babies' hair,
Christening dress faded cream.
Tatted lace trimmed cases
Pillows of a prairie bride's dreams.
Amid these fancy white effects
A bolt of black contrasts.
Accordion folds of Dad's silk scarf
Pungent with soil and sweat,
Tattered at the corners
From wind whipping his neck.
