Reunion

high prairie unfolds
driving through childhood country

grass
remembered burned dusty brown
greens saged hills
delights memory
fires rapid thoughts of green springs
always too short
toasting into summers

spotted horse
buffalo
medicine bow
names forgotten of wind-blown towns
drift past the window

there is an evil nostalgia
somehow connected to age
selective memories that leave out
bitter winters                bitter times
culling to peaceful halcyon days
and friends long gone

now are alkaline badlands
waterless and bare
dropping into rough rolling hills
jarred by occasional stark green
where water must sometime gather

I tell her stories of the land      the people
the good times
stroking the blissful
forgiving
amnesia
